"Mother... do you smell blood on me?"— Mai Shishikusa

Mai Shishikusa (獅子草 舞), regarded as The Demon's Daughter, is a character from The Onibi series.

She was the daughter of Ryou Shishikusa, belonging to the Shishikusa Clan. She was later affected by Akari Oborodzuka's curse, resulting in her killing every single member of her clan before being beheaded by Shikyou, the Amanojaku.

Appearance[]

In the first and most commonly used one, Mai has green shoulder-length hair with a dark red bow on top of her head and green eyes that turn red when she is under the effects of Akari's curse. She wears a beige kimono with gray sashes, black thigh-high tabi socks, and a red hakama skirt.

In Shikyou, The Amanojaku, she appears as a puppet created by Shikyou. The puppet has blank white circle-like eyes with blood leaking out of them, she also has blood leaking out of her mouth.

In Kubinashi Enbukyou, her bow is missing, and she's seen drawn as an uncolored/transparent sketch with white rough outlines. Her pupils are snake-shaped.

In Kimikage Enbukyou -Kitsune no Yomeiri-, she appears mostly the same, but with white tabi and kimono, blue sashes, and a longer skirt.

In Akkiyagyou, Mai has a red scar around her neck with stitches of the same color, she's seen with pink eyeshadow, lavender lipstick, and purple fingernails.

In her canon design, Mai has the first appearance, but she has brown hair tied in a braid with a hair tube.

Personality[]

Mai was described as a sweet, cheerful, and charming girl who had many suitors after her, being generally well-meaning and well-liked before the incident.

Hating her prestigious lifestyle and the fact that most people feared her as a result of her father's status, she became rebellious, being said to break her curfew, sneak outside, and cause trouble.

After Mai is affected by Akari's curse, she seems to have developed a sadistic personality, prone to taking murder as a first-hand solution to her problems; she also has become apathetic, nonchalantly admitting to her parents that she murdered several people and proceeded to eat them.

Background[]

Early Life[]

Mai was a member of Shishikusa Clan and the daughter of Ryou and Tomonari Shishikusa. She had an adoptive sister named Shizune.

The Shishikusa Clan was the richest in their Castle Town, and there were rumors about being cursed with many misfortunes after disrespecting or upsetting them.

These rumors began when four people passing by Castle Town made fun of Mai when she was little. Three of the men went missing, and one ran away from Castle Town.

Mai, according to many of the townspeople, was a very sweet and cute girl, and she's very well-liked due to her status as the only biological daughter of the clan and her attractiveness.

Mai liked to sneak out of her overprotective home when she had the chance and would get caught up in many shenanigans before Akari's curse affected her.

Kitsune no Yomeiri[]

"I don't even know anymore. I no longer feel sick, and the taste of blood is gone. I'm starting to enjoy it now. It's delicious. Delicious. Delicious. De-"
- Mai eating human flesh for the first time

On the 18th of May, after sneaking out for a bit, Mai went back to the Shishikusa mansion and saw that Daiji, her bodyguard, was apparently waiting for her outside her room. Mai revealed that she knew he wasn't here last night, and Daiji stated that it was on her father's orders. Mai shruged it off and tells him that she's only joking.

When Mai heads to have breakfast with Ryou and Tomonari, she was surprised by the number of guards and samurais in the room. Then, Tomonari said that he is bringing her a tutor today, canceling her plans of going out of town as a result of bandits.

Mai was immediately able to tell that it's a lie as a result of their clan's status but accepted it nonetheless. After her parents leave, she asked Daiji if he will eat, but he told her not to worry about him.

Finishing her food, Mai went to her room and thought about sneaking out, so she got rid of Daiji by teasing him. Toki-san told her to be careful after being unable to convince her not to go out.

When Mai entered the town, she noticed that it is eerily empty, with no one in sight. Feeling uneasy, she decided to go home. However, halfway, Mai heard the sound of a girl asking for help behind the bushes, alongside slicing noises and Mai smelling the stench of blood not too long afterward.

Fearing for her life, Mai rushed back home and entered the empty kitchen, seeing that Toki-san was rushing between rooms. She tried to tell her about what she saw, but Toki-san insisted that Mai should go back to her room.

Mai then saw an injured Daiji in Toki-san's lap, and unable to take all the things happening at once, Mai vomited, and Shizune is assigned to take her back to her room.

Just before they reach their destination, she was yanked towards Shizune. Looking around, she saw that Shizune was in the grasp of one of the Oborodzuka brother's hands in the courtyard. Shizune is killed shortly after in front of Mai's eyes, and she passed out when one of the brothers approached her.

When Mai woke up, she found herself with Kanishiro and another one of the brothers. When the bag is removed from her head, the brother brings over a cart containing human flesh.

Mai struggled, asking to be let go, but Kanishiro used his eyes to calm her down. Her body then involuntarily moved on its own, diving her hands into the pile of human meat.

When eating it for the first time, her body rejected it, but after a few moments, Mai started eating it in delight, exclaiming that it's delicious. Signaling that Akari's curse has been activated.

The Incident[]

"F-F- Father, mother... I’m s-so hungry."

Mai was returned home shortly after, and from here on out, Mai's perception of the events enfolding becomes foggy. She doesn't recognize the people talking to her when she was back safe and sound.

After a few days, she killed and ate the household cook, Toki-san. She stuffed her body into the closet, seemingly leaving it for later, but the corpse is discovered by Ryou.

On May 26th, her birthday, Mai proceeded to eat one of her relatives, Masato-kun, after he confessed that he likes her, with Mai prieciving it as him wanting to mate with her.

When the blood of his corpse is found in her room, Mai tried to prove her innocence by saying that she was in the restroom, but Ryou is able to tell that it's a lie and calls her to have an important talk with her and her father.

Mai tried to lie again, but her parents confronted her. Mai laughed, not believing that she had been discovered so quickly, and confessed to having eaten the person and proceeded to eat her parents as well.

Kimikage Enbukyou[]

It is believed that soon after, Mai goes into a frenzied state as a result of Akari's curse and eats the townsfolk of the Shishikusa Clan, causing a genocide. This caused Shikyou to be outraged because of Mai committing the worst sin of all: taking human life.

Kubinashi Enbukyou[]

"Why am I laying on the floor? Is that my body? Why is only my body walking?"

Not much is known in detail, but it seems as if Mai was transported to the world of the dead, confronted by the vengeful spirits of the people she killed (or her parents killed), as they initiate the "Beheading Dance Performance" in the Shishikusa theater.

Mai is then said to be beheaded by Shikyou, her headless body walking on its own. Her head is later sent to Akari in a basket.

Himeyuri Enbukyo[]

While Mai was being beheaded, she was imagining a happy life had she had not been cursed and met Akari in other circumstances.

Relationships[]

Ryou Shishikusa[]

Ryou was Mai's mother, and she adored her daughter to bits, spoiling her and giving her plenty of her undivided love and attention, whereas Mai seemed to feel the same.

Tomonari Shishikusa[]

Tomonari was Mai's father, who seemed to love her a lot, and Mai felt the same way, although she considered him to be scary when he was angry. Most of his decisions to murder people for money were made so Mai could have a comfortable life.

Shizune Shishikusa[]

Mai's adopted sister. Mai seemed to love her deeply and be able to look past the fact that Shizune wasn't related by blood, as she was completely frozen in shock upon seeing her get smashed up by a giant. However, this reaction might exclusively be fear from seeing a murderous giant, as opposed to shock from losing Shizune.

Daiji[]

He was Mai's bodyguard and first aide.

Toki[]

The Shishikusas' household cook. Mai considers her more a mother than Ryou.

Akari Oborodzuka[]

Not much is known about their relationship in detail, but it can be assumed that Mai was very infatuated with Akari. It is unknown whether Akari returned those feelings or not.

Shikyou, the Amanojaku[]

Mai's murderer, she hates Mai and the Shishikusa Clan due to them being atheists and thinking they are better than Gods. She also hates Mai because she met Akari, and that wasn't meant to happen. She later beheaded Mai due to committing the worst sin of all; taking people's lives.

Amaterasu[]

Not much is known about their relationship in detail, but they are seen alongside each other in the song Demons March.
