Sister's Story Preview[]

The catalyst was a trifling matter. It was the consequence of an overpowering affection for each other. They both yearned to share everything. Both the elder and the younger sister harbored the same desire: "I want to make you forever mine." And so, in order to share their final moment together, the younger sister impaled herself along with her elder sibling.

The younger sister laughed in ecstasy at this ultimate pleasure.

Story's Introduction - Part One[]

The family was very close-knit, and the children were the pride of their parents. The sisters shared a strong bond, with the elder one being kind to the younger and the younger one reciprocating the same kindness. The elder sister had poor eyesight, which the younger sister would compensate for. In return, as the younger sister was not very talkative, the elder sister would cover for her. The sisters were inseparable, always together.

Story's Introduction - Part Two[]

On their seventh birthday, the younger sister was found brutally murdered in her room. The elder sister, who had been sleeping in the adjacent room, remained unharmed. According to the police, it seemed like an intruder had entered through the window. When asked by their mother if she had heard or seen anything, the elder sister claimed to know nothing. Gradually, she became more sociable and started making new friends.

Story's Introduction - Part Three[]

For the past ten years, the elder sister had been placing flowers on the grave of her deceased younger sister. Standing in front of the grave, she pondered how much her own personality had changed over the years. At times, she was told she seemed like a different person, her eyesight improved rapidly, and she found herself involved in events she had no recollection of. Surely, it must be a mistake.

(Almost) The Full Story[]

On the night of her seventh birthday, a minor incident led the younger sister to inadvertently take the life of her elder sister. It was not out of resentment or hatred but rather an excessive love that drove her actions. Desiring to experience the pain her sister felt, she impaled herself alongside her sister, collapsing to the ground. Several hours later, the one who rose from the scene was the elder sister.

The resurrected sister was, in fact, the younger sister disguised as her elder sibling. Their resemblance was so striking that even their parents could not tell them apart, prompting the need for drastic changes in hairstyle and attire to maintain the charade. The younger sister, now assuming the role of her elder sister, convinced herself that she had been targeted for murder by her sister, all in an effort to fully embody the persona of her late sibling. From then on, the younger sister lived her days masquerading as the elder.

Upon reaching the age of nineteen, the younger sister-turned-elder sister began to sense something peculiar: she felt the presence of her sister's spirit. Though not a definite sighting and uncertain of its validity, she undeniably perceived the lingering resentment. "Did I truly end my sister's life at that moment? Could it be that I was originally the elder sister and was nearly murdered by my younger sibling?" These thoughts plagued her mind.

The younger sister came to realize that all the idiosyncrasies and subtle habits she had unknowingly adopted were actually traits of her elder sister. Initially consumed by the act of impersonating her sister, she had overlooked these aspects of herself. Yet, she continued to exhibit those very traits. Gradually, the younger sister became lost in the uncertainty of her own identity, unsure whether she was the elder or the younger. And then, one year later...

At the age of twenty, the younger sister decided to abandon the charade of being the elder sister and returned to her original long hair. However, strange occurrences began to happen with increasing frequency after she reverted to her former hairstyle. She would find herself holding scissors or tugging at her long hair on one side without realizing it. To her astonishment, the reflection in the mirror displayed a hairstyle that was half her own and half that of her deceased sister.

The younger sister pondered. Perhaps she was indeed the elder sister all along. Perhaps she had been the one nearly killed by her younger sibling. Gradually, she found herself growing resentful towards her old self. As night fell, the sound of a baby's cries became audible, and it didn't take long for her to realize that the voice belonged to her "younger sister." Eventually, she heard the crying emanating from within her own abdomen.

The "elder sister" realized that she was in danger of being killed by her "younger sibling" once again. She knew she had to expel her "younger sister" from within. Taking a blade, she pressed it against her own stomach. To quell her fear, she began to sing a song. It was the very song her "younger sister" had sung while attempting to end "her" life. It was at that moment that she recalled the truth: she was, indeed, the younger sister.

By the time she grasped the reality of the situation, it was too late. Her hands were stained with blood, the blade embedded in her abdomen. Drifting into unconsciousness, she realized that everything she had experienced thus far had been orchestrated by the elder sister. The younger sister had assumed the role of the elder, while the deceased elder sister had taken on the spirit of the younger. Succumbing to this twisted fate, the younger sister seamlessly transitioned into the realm of her elder sibling. There, she sang that familiar song once more. The love between sisters.

Watashi no Nanatsu no Oiwai ni's Description[]

The endearing sisters, known as Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, though their true names remain a mystery, were very charming and always seen holding hands and getting along well. The story began on the day of the younger sister's untimely death on their seventh birthday.

Description Continuation[]

The younger sister had actually attempted to possess her sister's mind using a curse, requiring a connection with the other person. When it was over, it was the older sister who arose. Whether this attempt was successful or not remains uncertain. By the way, GUMI played the role of the older sister, Amaterasu, and Miku portrayed the younger sister, Tsukuyomi. The true names of the sisters are now known only to themselves.

Further Details[]

Despite their seemingly close relationship on the surface, there may have been underlying feelings of resentment between the siblings. One day, the younger sister discovered the power of her curse upon hearing a voice, while whether the older sister possessed such abilities is unknown. Just for contemplation, the rest will remain a secret.

Watashi wa Futari no Oiwai ni's Description[]

It is said that the charming and highly regarded older sister of two twins committed suicide. Rumors had it that she had become mentally distorted, like a different person, since the accidental death of her younger sister years ago. But a shocking revelation came from the police report: it turned out that the sister who took her own life was actually the younger sister who was believed to have died in an accident years before. An investigation was initiated into this mysterious event.

Plot[]

Watashi no Nanatsu no Oiwai ni[]

"This is a story of two very intimate twin sisters.
The end is the beginning.
One day, they decided to become one.

'Believe before you see.'
The truth remains unknown."

On Amaterasu's seventh birthday, something minor between her and her sister leads to Amaterasu stabbing Tsukuyomi through the abdomen with a staff, and to avoid the blame for her death, she takes the appearance of her sister.

Watashi to Hitotsu no Shinzou wo[]

"This is a story of very intimate sisters.
One day, I noticed that one of the girls had become inconsistent.

'Farewell...'"

Decades later, the deceased spirit of Tsukuyomi comes back to haunt Amaterasu, disguised as how she originally was, causing confusion in Amaterasu and making her question who she truly is.

Watashi wa Futari no Oiwai ni[]

"This is a story of two sisters who became one person.
The outcome is wonderful.

'To you, who remain beautiful though you are dead...'"

Amaterasu can't tell which sister she is as a result of Tsukuyomi's influence, causing her to have half of the hairstyle of her sister.

In the dead of night, Amaterasu hears the piercing cry of Tsukuyomi coming from her own abdomen, and in an attempt to stop the sound, she stabs it.

Finally, as she slowly dies, she realizes that she has been the younger sister all along and that she was the murderer of her older sister.

Amaterasu's corpse is seen smiling with an open mouth at the end of the PV, laughing and humming even. This heavily implies the fact that Tsukuyomi possessed her sister's body after her death.

Akkiyagyou[]

"This is a song that advances in the opposite direction of the golden country.

'Demons and will-o'-the-wisp.'"

This song is not part of the Sister's Story, as it's only meant to be a contribution to two of Masa's most popular series. However, it features the final look of Amaterasu that was seen in Watashi wa Futari no Oiwai ni.

A Different Interpretation[]

There is a different interpretation of the Sister's Story, but being non-confirmed by Masa and incorrect, it was deemed non-canon and irrelevant. I feel like it definitely deserves an honorable mention here.

The two sisters were originally one soul: a hannya mask. Although, somehow, the soul splits, resulting in both Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu.

At some point, presumably on their 7th birthday, they both figure out what happened to their original soul, and they vow to correct it by stabbing each other at the same place, thus killing each other at once, in hopes that the soul will become whole again.

They carry out their plan, but it doesn't work out because, unlike Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu doesn't die, and as a result of her attempt failing, Amaterasu pretends to be Tsukuyomi and covers up everything as she lies to everyone.

Eventually, Amaterasu dies, and the soul splits again, reincarnating in another body; however, the soul is in two pieces despite being in the same body. The host of the body finds out about this on her 19th birthday and goes insane, as she has two souls inside her at once.

She then decides to take on the plan of the sisters and enacts it: killing herself with a stab to her abdomen in hopes that the two souls will become one again.

Luckily, the plan finally works, and the soul of the hannya mask becomes one again, ending the cycle of suffering for the two sisters.

Theories[]

  • In the Watashi no Nanatsu no Oiwai ni PV, both sisters are portrayed with a hannya mask, representing envy. It is understandable for Amaterasu, but the reason why Tsukuyomi was portrayed as jealous of her sister is unknown; however, it could be because Amaterasu got to be the young and playful sister, while Tsukuyomi got to be just the "mature and beautiful" sister who had to keep an image.
  • In the Watashi wa Futari no Oiwai ni PV, Tsukuyomi is portrayed with a noh mask, which represents a beautiful woman. This can possibly be how Amaterasu saw her sister: a woman much more beautiful than her, whereas she was just a demon.
  • In Akkiyagyou, it is mentioned that one of the twins' heads is turning into flowers; this could be alluring to the imagery in the Watashi to Hitotsu no Shinzou wo PV of Tsukuyomi's head being covered with flowers, which be interpreted as the ikebana flower arrangement, used to describe beauty. Or it can be seen as flowers growing in Tsukuyomi's grave.
  • Amaterasu pretending to be her sister poses a lot of issues, as they clearly don't have the same voice. It is possible that Amaterasu made a deal with a demon of some sort to sound like her sister, but it's considered a bit of a stretch since the sisters are both twins.
  • Amaterasu disguising herself as Tsukuyomi to avoid the blame for killing her is considered a bit strange, as people would still be concerned about the death of the other sister, but it's possible that people did not like Amaterasu enough to care.
