"Do you understand my suffering? Do you understand my pain?"— The Onibi
The Onibi (鬼火), Will-o'-the-Wisp, or Jack-o'-Latern, is a character that appears in the Onibi series.
Nobody knows who they are, and Masa refuses to talk about them when asked.
They also have no official name.
Appearance[]
The Onibi is modeled after Hatsune Miku. They have long hair tied in twintails with hair ribbons.
They are all black with a white outline, no mouth, and have purple blood dripping from the eyes and mouth of a small face on the middle of their neck, alongside arms and a foot coming out of their hair. They also wear a kimono.
They most commonly appear with yellowish flames on both of their sides, bright red orbs imitating eyes above them, and a large, floating mouth next to their neck.
In Onibi, during the second verse of the song, the Onibi is seen with a somewhat different appearance: changing from white to red outlines, having their neck elongated and bent to the left, and glowing red eyes.
Personality[]
Not much is known about the Onibi's personality, but they can possibly be presumed as vengeful, refusing to pass on, and wanting to torment those who tormented them for them to understand their suffering. Not forgetting what has happened to them previously, as seen by how they mention many methods of their suffering in Onibi.
Background[]
Not much can be known about Onibi, as their a mysterious character, but what is known is, chronologically within the story, that they first appeared in the song Onigumo to Kitsune no Shishi to.
According to an official definition, onibi (鬼火, "Demon Fire") is a type of atmospheric ghost light in legends of Japan, which is born from the corpses of humans and animals.
Theories[]
- There is a common theory that the Onibi is an amalgamation made of the spirits of the victims who have suffered under the hands of the Shishikusas in their theaters, being killed and sold only for entertainment. They then awaken when Akari curses Ryou, most likely as a result of her immense powers. After that, they begin seeking revenge against the Shishikusas.
- There is a possibility that Akari knows about the Onibi, too. In the song Onigumo to Kitsune no Shishi to, they both repeat in unison: "Do you even understand my suffering? Do you even understand my pain?"
- Adding more, it is most likely that the Onibi was awakened by Akari specifically, as she understood their pain and possessed great powers to end it, unlike the other victims who were killed and understood their suffering but were unable to do anything.
- It is plausible that this would make The Onibi a kitsunebi instead.
- It is possible that the Onibi could be a representation of Akari's curse, as it's noted that they appear in most of the songs where the curse was present; however, if this was true, they should have appeared in the song Meikyou Oni Warabe.
- In the song Onibi, the reason for the Onibi's different appearance in the second verse could be fury and anger.
Trivia[]
Conceptualization and Origin[]
- In the canonical PV of Kitsune no Yomeiri, they have the same appearance as always, retaining the twintails that signify Hatsune Miku. This could be an overlook on Masa's part.
- The Onibi always appears in the beginning or ending segments of songs; the only exceptions to this rule are Kubinashi Enbukyou, where only the red eyes appear, and the song Onibi.
- They appear in almost every songs, the exceptions are Meikyou Oni Warabe, Himeyuri Enbukyou, and probably Kubinashi Enbukyou.
Curiosities[]
- The Onibi and the Doll Owner share the same blood color, which is purple.
